Paving the way
The "Paving the way" guidelines cover pedagogy, accessibility (both design and technical requirements), technical standards and quality assurance. It also contains information about the implementation and dissemination activities carried out by the NLN Materials team to integrate the NLN materials into the post-16 sectors.
A guide is available online to help tutors make the best use of the e-learning materials that are offered free through the National Learning Network programme.
The NLN ILT Subject Mentor team played a central role in promoting the use of e-learning resources in the classroom. Team members made nearly 1,600 visits to colleges since the start of the programme, where they spoke to more than 20,000 colleagues. The mentor team built up a wealth of experience of the key things that help make the most of the NLN Materials. Here are their top tips...
For practitioners:
Find out what materials are there, and find short 'chunks' which are relevant to how you teach your subject.
Become familiar with relevant learning objects and know how to use them alongside your own materials and resources.
Link the materials to your schemes of work and be aware of the varied ways in which the materials can be embedded into the learning process.
Make sure they are easy to access and use - check they can be accessed from your teaching area.
Be aware that there may be relevant materials apart from those listed under your subject area.
Study the format of the learning objects and look at them as a source of ideas for re-using both the learning objects and your current coursework in more interesting ways.
For organisations:
Ensure the materials are readily available in a way which matches the college's needs, either via a VLE or intranet - just as you would invest time purchasing, cataloguing and providing print resources.
Give practitioners time to investigate the materials and build them into their schemes of work, for example by working with your local RSC to provide structured sessions to look at different ways of using the materials.
Advertise the availability of the materials to both staff and students.
Provide clear mapping of NLN Materials to the curriculum for each subject, so practitioners can clearly see how the materials can make their job easier.
Provide sufficient equipment, with easy access and plenty of technical support for staff.
