It is essential that the following plug-ins and up-to-date versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox or Netscape Navigator are installed on college computers for many of the NLN materials to be used successfully. Requirements vary per material, so if you require more detailed descriptions of what is required, please see the tutor guides, available on each Learning Objects' page (or see this page for a complete list of guides).
Download Real Player - the link given here is for a BBC web-page which gives access to a slimmed-down version of the Real Player installer, and is the recommended route to installation.
Document viewers
Download Foxit PDF Reader - for reading PDF files, used by some Learning Objects for supporting documentation, such as printable work-sheets. The tutor guides are also available in PDF format. Several other PDF reader applications are also available - we recommend this one for a free and lightweight installation.
Download Microsoft Word Viewer - this application can be used to view Word documents if you do not have the full version of Word available.
Requirements for "The Street"
The Street is a large interactive Learning Object that utilises Adobe Shockwave, and may also have the following additional requirements.
Download Microsoft's Speech API Note that the Microsoft SAPI is included in all modern Windows versions and is unlikely to be required. A quick way to check is to examine a computer's Control Panel - if an entry titled Speech exists there, you should not need this download.
Download a Text To Speech Engine. Microsoft's Text-to-Speech engine is usually automatically included in Windows XP, so there may be no need to manually install this.
Shockwave Extras for The Street For full functionality of The Street, you should install the following (after installing Adobe Shockwave). If you are asked for a a username/password when downloading, please use the following. Note that these are case sensitive. Username: streetuser Password: Str33t
